Signbite : Museum of Arts and Design : July 10, 2011

The wayfinding and signage for MAD were designed by popular design firm, Pentagram. I was quite excited about seeing their work and have generally felt a little underwhelmed….their work is perhaps more photogenic than genuinely stunning. The actual “graphic identity” utlising a smart logo is vibrant – but somehow fails to translate vibrantly into the signage. I am not sure this is necessarily Pentagram’s fault. There is an interesting article about the design process by Pentagram here. Similarly the building, designed in collaboration with architect Brad Cloepfil of Allied Works Architecture, leaves little to the imagination. If the best one can say about a building is “nice staircase”…. It’s just a little, well, dull.
