Montréal really does give new meaning to the word diversity, the theme for the 2011 SEGD Conference which the city was hosting. Much of what I saw in Montréal was based at the conference centre and various tours but we did spend a few nights on the town – a particularly memorable one watching the Ice Hockey finals. Montréal is an extraordinary city to study signage with it’s bilingual laws. It’s complicated but I believe all exterior signs must have English and French with the French being the predominant. In France the stop signs say “stop” in Montréal they say “arret”. We stayed on the 26th floor of an immense apartment development which had it’s own underground city for the winter months when it is too cold to do much outside.
